Pigment

Finely ground powders available in many colors. At one time almost all pigments were made from various colors of earth mined from different locations around the world. Most modern pigments are synthetically made. Pigments do not dissolve into a solvent like dyes, rather pigments are suspended in a binder (usually a finish) which acts to "glue" the particles to the surface of the wood. Since they do not absorb into the wood fibers pigments tend to obscure the wood. Household paint is basically a binder with enough pigment to completely obscure the surface onto which it is applied.
